Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter differs greatly from other games within the Breath of Fire series. Although the main characters are still Ryu and Nina, this is the only game in which Deis does not appear. It is also the only game which does not include a Fishing mini-game, although the Fairy Colony does return.

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter was the top-selling game in Japan during the week of its release at 80,059 copies. By the end of the year, it had sold 140,073 copies.
